Drawing A perfect sunset with soft pastels | Dilip Realistic Sketching

How to use soft pastels on paper, a beautiful sunset

There is very beautiful relation with painting and nature. Today I thought of drawing some new kind of painting apart from the forest and other paintings. As we see sunset every day but I think only nature lovers knows how much artistic a sunset can be, how deep and beautiful it is. So I have drawn a beautiful frame of a golden sunset with soft pastel. I saw many people drawing sunset with water color, oil painting but many few made it with soft pastel with this technique. This painting is basically for beginners that’s why i divided it in many steps for understanding it from very basic level.

I very much like to draw realistic paintings. So soft pastel is one of my favorite colors .It has many benefits for drawing, it is easy to use, it gives very real effect in your paintings, it is also very soft and smooth.

TOOLS: Violet, red, deep yellow, light yellow, black art paper.

How to use soft pastels step by step for beginner

STEP 1: As it is a picture of sunset, here we will have to use many light colors. So to make the light effect more clearly I recommend using black sheet because light colors are more obvious on the dark colors.

First draw a line with violet color little below the middle of the paper. Now you can see a background and a four background on the paper. So what I did here I divided the paper in four part in my mind. Then according to your drawing divide into 1:4. If you want to express the river closer in the drawing then draw the line leaving three parts from below of the paper. And if you want the river far away in the drawing then draw line in the first from below of the paper.

STEP 2: Then use violet for the first cote in the river (don’t rub). Here I used the violet for the dark base so that the light color can be more obvious.

STEP 3: Then put the red color in the way it is not fully covered on the violate color. Use it as it shows a mixture of violate and the red (don’t rub).

STEP 4: After the step 1 and step 2 we had a clear combination of dark colors like red and violate, on that we will use deep yellow in the middle for giving an effect of sunlight. Here I used deep yellow so we can use light color later.

STEP 5: Rub it in the soft way (don’t go rough). After rubbing we will have dark effect on the sides and the effect of sunlight in the middle.

STEP 6: Then comes the sky part, most important part of the painting. From the edge of the ending river I put red to the middle of sky and then yellow in the rest area and pink in the side areas. This is basically for having a smooth golden combination of sunlight. Then rub it smoothly.

STEP 7: Then again use deep yellow for more golden effect to have an obvious sunlight. Then again rub it to have blur effect.

STEP 8: Then you have a deep portion from the step 6 and step 7. Then make sun as the way it should look like the cloud goes in to the sun (half above the deep portion half in the below, see picture) as we see almost every evening in the time of sunset. Then use light yellow for more detailing in the middle sky.

STEP 9: Then a very interesting part where you will see you drawing turning to a realistic painting basically it’s a touch up part. Now we have a effect of golden sunset, along with that we want to show the twilight coming. For that we need the deep clouds of twilight. So take violate to make cloudy effect in the sides of the sky .And also put violate for some deep shade in the river because we will use very light yellow to make little wave . And also the reflections of the sun in the river with light yellow. And you can give more touch ups as you wish to develop your painting.
